A grown up business

I often talk about becoming a grown up business. This is a key stage in the development of many companies. It's when you make the change from working as a freelancer or as a partnership, where you've been trying things out, to actively growing the business and trying to make it into a real success.

You can read about the different stages of a company, or about making the leap from a freelancer to being a grownup business.

How we help

She acts as a mentor for your business – helping you cut short the learning curve and get to where you want to be faster than if you were on your own. Julia meets with you regularly and keep in touch by phone and email to make sure that you don't have to go through all of this on your own.

One of the main obstacles for entrepreneurs is a feeling of isolation. Working with the Joy of Business means that you don’t have feel that you’re on your own any more – you have a mentor who believes in you and your business, and access to a wide network of contacts.

As well as working to boost your confidence, Julia gives you practical advice about how to improve your business. Key areas that we work with you in are:
  • Marketing –Julia works with businesses to improve their marketing. Julia provides both strategic and tactical marketing advice
  • Sales – how to sell convincingly and from the heart
  • Money and finances – how to feel good about making money and how to get your finances under control.
  • Networking – finding the people that can help you get to where you want to be.
  • Business systems – how to spend less time on your admin and more time doing the things that make you money.

Julia also helps businesses to find finance and investment to build their business to the next stage. One recent client had been turned down for a loan by their bank. Julia rewrote their business plan, introduced them to the right people at the banks, and they had four offers of finance. Since then they've been able to employ new staff and really get going.

Examples of how we help

We help small business owners and entrepreneurs with business planning and finding funding and finances - we’ve raised millions of pounds for clients over the years in grants, loans and investment. This can be from a grant of few hundred pounds to get a website and business cards printed, low interest loans for start-ups, through to raising tens of thousands of pounds in a mixture of bank loans and equity investment.

People come to us with an initial business idea and we’ll help them to work out whether or not they should go ahead. Clients appreciate the honest approach – we’ll tell you straight whether it’s the right opportunity for you.

Often clients come to us when their business has been going for a while and it’s not quite doing what they want it to. If you think your business could benefit from more customers and make more money for you, then get in touch with us for your business health check

Most businesses benefit from help with their marketing. We help entrepreneurs work out the most effective form of marketing and what fits with your budget. For example, people will often jump into expensive advertising campaigns, when they really need to use other forms of marketing first. We’ll help you put together a marketing plan, and work with you to make sure it gets put it into practice.

Julia Chanteray of The Joy of Business has a very wide network of people she can call on for help and advice. She can put clients in touch with the right people – for example, recently we’ve helped clients find a specialist printer, and a local property finder for advice on finding commercial premises.
