Ruth Smith on working with Julia Chanteray

Ruth Smith began working with Julia after she left her corporate job and wanted to set up her own business. The Joy of Business team caught up with Ruth for a chat about how her time with Julia has impacted her life and business.

You can watch or read the interview below.

Can you tell me what was the biggest impact of working with Julia?

I knew I wanted to start my own business after leaving the corporate world, but I was stuck on what to do. I had lots of ideas and Julia helped me find a business idea that was viable, that fitted with my passions and what I really care about.  It’s enabled me to build the sort of business that really chimes with who I am, and what I enjoy doing.

Fantastic. And what would you say is the sort of biggest impact on your business since working with Julia?

Well, I have a business. I started not knowing what I wanted to do and now I’ve got a marketing agency that focusses on building low carbon businesses. The Sustainable Results Lab exists. It’s all about helping environmental businesses grow sustainably. Which means I get to work in a sector that I really love.

What would you say is your ‘can’t live without it’ improvement?

I enjoy the fact that I do something I really enjoy, that I love and has a sense of purpose and meaning to it. It’s bigger than ‘I need to get out of bed and do this work because I have to’. And I love that I’ve made the move from employment to running my own business.

Julia has helped me create a business that is scalable. She’s helped me understand the difference between a freelancer and a business leader. It’s given me the confidence to aim high and create something bigger than just me. That’s what I’m trying to do; to create a team. And in my ideal world, I’ll have clients from around the globe because this is such an important sector.

Julia has helped me with pricing, going for bigger clients, and charging more than I might have done on my own.

It sounds good. And if you are talking to friend and family, what would you say about Julia and The Joy of Business?

I’d say incredibly knowledgeable about how business is changing, of the latest tools and techniques. Julia is clued up on the latest approaches to marketing and business growth. She is focused on how you add value.

Julia is very good at thinking about how you scale the business and to make things more efficient behind the scenes to enable you to grow. If you’ve got big ambitions and want to be more than a freelancer, to aim high, then she’s fantastic.

And what would you tell Julia to do differently?

I had a business coach where I used to work and she would follow up on meetings with an email with action points.  I’ll always write things down but having someone email you of the things we’ve agreed to do is helpful. But it’s not a big thing because Julia is great.
